Being a travel consultant, I have learned a lot the past few years. One of the most important things I learned is about Travel Insurance. As a consumer I used to think that it covers lost luggage, cancelled trips, and maybe missed flights but I was wrong. It is important to consider if I get sick in other states or countries who pays for my medical bills? Should I get sick on a trip the last thing I want to see when I get home is medical bills. My own health insurance does not cover me outside of New York State so if I get sick or injured anywhere else, I will be paying out of pocket unless I have a Travel Insurance plan that covers me! I have the option of calling my credit card company to see if they offer me a plan I can use or I can purchase a policy through my cruise line, tour company or Travel Consultant. If I get sick/injured on a cruise ship and need to be transported off I cannot imagine when the charge is for that, but I do not want to know. If I break a bone in another country, of course I am going to want good care and be taken care of, but I cannot imagine what other countries are going to charge me. Not only do I want my luggage covered and my trip interruption reimbursed I want to know that no matter where I go my family and I are going to be taken care of and the bills will be covered!
